Social networking has never really been my “thing.” Sure, I use blogs and social bookmarking, but constantly updating a Facebook profile or following the rest of the masses to MySpace just does not interest me. Then, Twitter was developed, and all of a sudden I got curious. This brings me to the question at hand: Why is everyone buzzing about twitter?

Twitter is a mix of a micro-blog and a social network, and its growth rate is increasing rapidly. This is why Twitter can be a useful tool to anyone for any reason, whether it be personal or for business. To me, Twitter is not so much social networking than social texting because the updates you make have to be o more than 140 characters. I understand the social aspect; it feels like you are texting on a cell phone. But, are there really aspects that benefit businesses? Yes, there is.

1. Speed. Blogs cannot even begin to compete when it comes to time. It is so quick and easy to update your followers on Twitter, and it is versatile. Twitter is accessible through web pages, blogs, mobile phones, BlackBerrys, etc.

2. Targeted traffic. Your traffic increases as your followers increase.

3. Viral marketing. Whether it relates to you personally or your business, when you create a new tweet, it will take off fast through followers, their followers, their follower’s followers, etc.

4. Sell more through branding. Over time, you can build up your credibility and reputation. This will increase the number of visitors to your blog, website, or wherever you sell your merchandise.

5. Advertise your blog. Quality blogs can be promoted through Twitter.

6. There is so much more.
