The power of suggestion is used in full measure in subliminal messaging techniques. The subconscious is treated to repeated bombardment of text, image, or sound. These are hidden from the normal senses, so that the conscious mind is bypassed. This is said to be more effective than forceful persuasion.
This technique uses modern technology to implant the messages in a variety of media. In audio CDs and MP3s, the messages are recorded in low levels and then a second recording of relaxing sounds and music is placed over the subliminal messaging. Although the positive audio phrases cannot be heard, it is said to be picked up and assimilated subliminally. In downloadable computer software, split second text is flashed onscreen at regular intervals. Again the positive messages cannot be seen and read by the naked eye. The audio and visual affirmations pertain to self-help issues. The most popular are getting rich, stopping a bad habit such as smoking, attracting a partner, attracting success, losing weight, and such.
There have been other uses of this technique, but it has since fallen out of favor. It was used in the late 50’s to persuade people to buy certain products. Persuasive images or text were juxtaposed with the regular advertising material, such as posters and other print ads and in television commercials as well.
Today’s subliminal messaging is different because it is about persuading the self rather than other people. Instead of supporting a consumerist society, the comeback of the method is all about improving the self.
